Birds - Barred Owl Class:Aves Order:Strigiformes Family:Strigidae ![]() Barred Owl, Strix varia. Also known as the Hoot Owl or the Wood Owl, this bird is very common in Canada and Eastern United States. His feathers are streaked white and brown. They build nests inside of trees and hunt small mammals and insects near dawn and dusk. Most of these owls were photographed at Fleming Park and on the Mill Creek trail 3 mile loop starting at Shawnee Mission Parkway.
