Birds - Common Loon
Class:Aves Order:Gaviiformes Family:Gaviidae Genus:Gavia

Common Loon, Gavia immer. Diving, water birds that spend most of their time off shore. In the summer the adults have a striking black and white spotted pattern on their backs, in winter they are gray and white. Loons are powerful divers, and do so to catch fish. I found mine at Longview Lake in April. They were also at Shawnee Mission Park and Wyandotte County Lake.
