Birds - Common Nighthawk
Class:Aves Order:Caprimulgiformes Family:Caprimulgidae

Common Nighthawk, Chordeiles minor. This nighthawk has very long wings with white spots near the tips. Their coloring is aimed for camaflouge in tan, brown, black and gray. They are crepuscular, meaning they are active at dawn and dusk. Nick Varvel photographed this Common Nighthawk in Miami County. I saw dozen of them over Leawood/South Kansas City in the early evening in mid-July.
