Birds - Downy Woodpecker
Class:Aves Order:Piciformes Family:Picidae


Downy Woodpecker, Picoides pubescens. Small, black and white woodpecker commonly found near feeders or balancing on branches using its chisel like beak to dig in the bark for insects. Males have that telling red spot on the back of the head. The Hairy Woodpecker, larger than the Downy but very similar in appearance, is more rare.
