Birds - Great Egret
Class:Aves Order:Pelecaniformes Family:Ardeidae

Great Egret, Ardea alba. Also known as Common Egret or Large Egret, this large waterbird is bright white with black legs and feet. The bill is yellow. They live near water and breed in colonies. A breeding male will develop bright green coloring on the face and long aigrettes, or decorative feathers on the back. Plume Hunting: The Great Egret was hunted nearly to extinction for these decorative feathers in the late 1800's, when it was fashionable to put them in ladies hats. This led to the establishment of some of the first known organizations to protect birds. Great Egret pictures are from John McConnell and Nick Varvel.
