Birds - Long-eared Owl
Class:Aves Order:Strigiformes Family:Strigidae Genus:Asio


Long-eared Owl, Asio otus. Named for the ear like tufts of feathers atop their heads, these owls actually have extremely good hearing. They can hunt by sound alone. They are well camaflouged in the woods with their foilage coloring, but have yellow eyes. Long-eared Owl photographed in early December at Lyon County State Lake.
