Birds - Northern Flicker
Class:Aves Order:Piciformes Family:Picidae

Northern Flicker, Colaptes auratus. The woodpecker known by a hundred names (or so says Wiki)! They can be found all across the country. There are a couple of things that separate Flickers from other woodpeckers. The first is the migration habits of those in northern states, most woodpeckers live as permanent inhabitants. The second is their willingness to leave the trees to look for insects in flight and for ants under the surface of the ground. Flickers are large and very handsome birds with their white and black spotted leggings, brown jacket and the trademark red V on the back of the neck. The Yellow-shafted Flicker males have a black mustache on their cheek while the Red-shafted Flickers sport a red mustache. My birdseed pusher indicated that in the winter Red-shafted Flickers can show up at Kansas City feeders. He also indicated that he has seen the product of unholy marraiges - male flickers with a red mustache on one side and a black on the other.
