Birds - Northern Pintail
Class:Aves Order:Anseriformes Family:Anatidae Genus:Anas

Northern Pintail, Anas acuta. This is a pretty commonly seen duck across the states in winter. They are larger birds, with a wingspan up to three (3) feet. They are named for the point that the tail feathers end in. The male's bodies are gray to brown (depending on season), with a white underside that comes up and around the neck. There are darker feathers streaking the wings. Females are spotted brown and lack the white wrapped neck. Photographed in the wild by John McConnell and in captivity by Nick Varvel.
