Birds - Mourning Dove
Class:Aves Order:Columbiformes Family:Columbidae

Mourning Dove, Zenaida macroura. Also known as the Turtle Dove or the Rain Dove. These super common birds are named for their mournful coo. They mate monogamously and breed several broods a year. Their huge populations are counteracted by their popularity as a game bird. It is estimated that more than 20 million Mourning Doves are killed each years in the US for sport. These birds arrive at the birdbath in large flocks. They sort of just wander around searching the ground for food. Like the Robins and Juncos they have no interest in the birdfeeder. I love the takeoff sound that the Mourning Doves make. It's sort of a trill that is loudest at the launch point and then fades rapidly as they fly away.
