Class:Aves Order:Passeriformes Family:Fringillidae Genus:Loxia

Red Crossbill, Loxia curvirostra. Also known as the Common Crossbill, these are finches. As you may have guessed, their tips of their bills cross over one another, improving their ability to manipulate the seeds from their foods. Sexual Dichromatism is seen in these finches. The males are reddish orange while the females are yellow-green. Both have gray wings. Red Crossbill photographed by Nick Varvel.
