3 Years After His Massive Stroke, Randy Travis Returns To Sing “Amazing Grace” Like Only He Can

A deeply emotional performance was captured in this video clip by country music legend Randy Travis in honor of George Jones, another fine country legend. The tribute was performed in the Grand Ole Opry, where many a country singer has had the chance to shine.

All lighting was subdued except for the soft, purple and blue-hued stage lighting that backlighted Travis as he sang “Amazing Grace,” to a quiet audience. After the spotlight focused on Travis, he appeared alone in almost eerie silence. With just a gentle strum of his guitar, Travis began to sing.

Throughout the heartfelt song, delivered in the singer’s signature rich, deep tones, unhurried and respectfully, not a sound from the audience disturbed the heartfelt rendition that filled the auditorium.
Alan Jackson, Vince Gill, Travis Tritt and Randy Travis, among others, attended the tribute to pay their respects to the industry pioneer that had been George Jones, which included many of the biggest names in the country music industry.

He had suffered a massive stroke three years earlier, which put his future in doubt, but his wife Mary says that it has been a long, difficult road filled with many emotional twists and turns, but they are grateful for the support and prayers of Randy’s fans.

“We’re blessed. We’re happy to be where we are. We don’t know what God has in store for us at the end of this recovery. Right now, we’re just thankful to be where we are, and we’re singing a different song,” she says while holding back a tear. “We’re happy to serve a purpose wherever there is a purpose for us to serve. Of course, one day he would love to be back up on that stage. Right now, we’re just enjoying life, and are very blessed to be where we are.”

As Mr. Travis’ voice and playing skills were not restored to their former state until many years after the stroke, this performance was three years after the stroke. God Bless you, Randy. You still got it.
Please share Randy Travis’s deeply moving tribute to George Jones with friends if you are touched by it.
